Greece, one of Europe's main holiday destinations. Not the toughest to come to a selection of destinations, but there's one complication: the many islands. Which ones to pick and which to skip?
This is our choice of destinations for Greece:
- Athens, of course, and also Greece's second-largest city Thessaloniki merits inclusion.
- Then there's the islands. Crete's a no-brainer, of course. Mykonos and Santorini are also highlights on many itiniraries and pretty much cover the Cyclades. Including the likes of Paphos and Naxos, also Cyclades highlights, might be too much and will rarely be done in isolation without visiting either Mykonos or Santorini.
- On the western coast we include Corfu and Zakynthos, which cover the Ionian Islands. Rhodes, all the way east near Turkey, is a must as well.
- It gets more difficult next: the likes of Kos, Samos, and Lesbos are all holiday destinations on their own, but would rarely be included in, say, a 3-week round trip. None can really make the case for inclusion.
- Moving to the mainland, the monasteries of Meteora are a sure highlight, and so are the ruins of Delphi. On the Pelopennese peninsula, the ruins of Olympia are a standard destination.
- We feel that we're still a little slim on the mainland, but it gets tougher from here without standout highlights. There's the towns of Nafplion, Epidaurus, and Corinth on the peninsula as are the ruins of Mycenae and Mistra, and the island of Hydra right off the coast. Since none really stands out we take the peninsula as a whole. Most people will likely spend multiple days on the peninsula anyway. Since Hydra is officially not part of Pelopennese, we include it separately.
- Anything else on the mainland? The Pindus Mountains? Or Mount Olympus? The second wins, because, well, it's Mount Olympus.
